It may sound trite but I don’t write
in the morning or at night
to find the truth or find the light.

I don’t compose, as some suppose,
to afford some better clothes.
It’s not for that that I pen prose.

I do not choose a time of day
to employ the artist’s way
or to dream I’m more than clay.

I write so I won’t turn to dust
or desiccate down into dust.
You have to take my word on trust.
I do not write for love or lust.
I write because I must.

Mornings really aren’t my thing, so anything that requires effort before I even crawl out of bed just isn’t going to happen.

I am working toward establishing a couple of rituals, though. One is to do at least one cooking experiment every weekend. I’m currently fascinated by texture manipulation, and that’s not something you can do stream-of-conscious.

Another is to go through my list of software ideas and get at least one a month to a state I can contribute to an open source community.

My rituals are meant to keep me inspired, but they take more equipment than a pen and a notepad. Typical guy, right?
